How to Start a Side Gig to Help Pay for Your Wedding

Your wedding is one of the happiest days of your life. Planning and paying for a wedding, however, can be pretty stressful. Some couples are lucky enough to have relatives who are willing and able to help pay for their wedding. For the rest of us, though, it’s an opportunity to get creative. Perhaps this is why many couples consider starting their own businesses and side hustles in the gig economy to help bring in some extra cash to spend on their special day.

The average cost of a wedding in San Diego is about $37,599, which is a year’s salary or more for many people. Many couples are working around this staggering figure by cutting corners with wedding planning, creating DIY wedding decor, and finding ways to make some extra income. Sure, you could rent your home on AirBNB or open an Etsy shop, but let’s be honest: that probably won’t raise enough money to pay off your big day.

Another option that is more realistic for many people is starting your own business. Although most businesses are owned by men, researchers estimate that women-owned businesses will make up one-third of all new jobs created this year. If you’re a bride-to-be (or groom-to-be), here are some of our favorite tips on how to start and manage a side hustle to help you earn more money for your wedding:

First, consider what type of business you will start. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to quit your full-time job. (Trust us, you’ll need all the money you can get while planning your wedding!) Instead, start with your passions. If you love kids, why not start babysitting on nights and weekends? Most of us know busy parents who would love a break – or a date night. If you’re good with computers, you might consider opening a side business where you design websites or repair laptops. Find something you enjoy, are good at, and that people would be willing to pay you to do.

It’s also important to research what options are available to you in your local area. For instance, if you live in California, you will have access to a variety of statewide and regional organizations that will help you with nearly every aspect of your business. This makes the Golden State one of the best places in America for entrepreneurs. No wonder there’s so much innovation in Silicon Valley! What’s more is that there are plenty of San Diego-specific groups for the self-starters out there, making San Diego a melting pot of entrepreneurs, side-giggers, and freelancers.

One of the biggest hesitations most people have when it comes to starting a business is money. Startup costs can be expensive. Depending upon what type of business you’re creating, you might have initial or ongoing overhead costs. These costs can feel intimidating if you’ve never run a business before. After all, most of us are not made of money, especially when we’re planning a wedding!

Luckily, there are still options available for you. Many women don’t realize they qualify for special business loan options specifically created for all types of women entrepreneurs. Small business loans for women include SBA Loans, Term Loans, Business Lines of Credit and Short-Term Loans.

Of course, the loans listed above are just a few of the many options available. You might also consider microlending or crowdfunding websites to help get your new business off the ground. With a little creativity, your money-making options are almost endless!

As you can see, you don’t have to stress over not having enough money upfront to start your business, especially if you’re a woman. Thanks to the wide variety of loans available for female entrepreneurs these days, there’s something for everyone. Why not go for your dreams, bring in some extra income, and pay for your wedding costs all at the same time?

Fun Goodies From

I often get asked about ideas for Groomsmen gifts. I tend to lean more towards the practical when gifting men, so I follow this advice for my couples. So, when Groomsday shared some of their products with me, I wanted to share! First up, these personalized socks! A must-have for any guy in a wedding. Quality is wonderful and it is a simple way to add a punch to men's attire. My husband is Norwegian and a beer drinker, so this Viking drinking horn caught my eye. You can have it personalized with a letter, and is a fun addition to any beer drinker's collection of glasses. Plus, it makes for a fun conversation piece! And, it's packaged really well, so if your attendant is traveling home after the wedding, it won't break! The site has a bunch of options, particularly if you want a unique gift for all of [...]

And how adorable are these make-up bags? They come in a variety of colors, can be monogrammed and are adorable! Here's mine! With my monogrammed married name:) It is a beautiful teal color, with white stitching, and a grey tassel. The zipper is metal, and the bag is super soft! The bag currently comes in 14 color options! I'm currently using the bag as a mini make-up bag. Within my purse, I keep essentials like touch up items, a jade roller, as well as hand lotion and hair ties. I do this because I am the queen of spilling my makeup in my purse! If I were to gift this item to bridesmaids, I would include lip gloss, blotting paper, [...]

Wedding Gifting 101: Advice from Zola

It's engagement season! Yep! You read that correctly. A very high percentage of couples that get engaged each year do so between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. It's so exciting--particularly for us here in San Diego when wedding season lasts much of the year. We're partnering with our friends over at Zola to provide information on gifts. When should you register for them, how much should you give as a wedding guest, and how to begin your honeymoon registry and honeymoon plans! So let's jump right in! We encourage our couples to register early in the process. Guests are likely to check for registry information once they receive their Save the Date. And sometimes, it's their only peek at a wedding website! While you might not be quite ready to hone in on a china pattern quite yet, it's advantageous to put initial information on your wedding website so guests can [...]

Paradise Point Wedding: Tiffany & John

Paradise Point tops the list of our favorite places to work in San Diego. Once you are inside the resort, you truly feel like you are on vacation! With incredible views to boot, it is an excellent place for a destination wedding. Isn't this circular arch absolutely incredible? We just adore working with Organic Flora... Look at all of this incredible goodness! Her bouquet was absolutely heavenly, and photos of loved ones were tied to the stems. Though the vibe of the day was quite romantic, the aquamarine in the bridesmaid dresses gave the day a tropical feel similar to Paradise Point.   This is one of our favorite moments of the day! We absolutely adore how much the bride and groom are beaming during speeches. Tiffany and John's wedding took place in the height of summer--in August. However, how incredible is this backdrop? Just a handful of people enjoying [...]

10 Steps to Getting Your Body Wedding Ready

When you walk down the aisle on your wedding day, there are two things you will know for certain: that the person waiting for you at the end of that aisle loves you, and that everyone’s eyes will be on you. How can you be sure you look your best on that special day? Here are a few tips: Plan Ahead Most brides start their wedding diet and exercise plan almost immediately after getting engaged. There are many reasons for this - they’re excited, they’re eager - but the most common reason is that they want plenty of time to sculpt their ideal bod. Make sure you give yourself time, too, so you can look your best without trying dangerous crash diets. Set Realistic Goals So, you’ve decided that you’re going to get wedding ready over the next twelve months. That’s a great idea and a great timeline. However, it’s [...]

Bali Hai Restaurant Wedding: Briar & Ryan

Where do I start when talking about this beautiful family? The picture above just speaks to how close they are. I recently coordinated Kristi's wedding (the oldest, who was expecting her first baby days after her sister's wedding) and was thrilled to be back on board for Briar's big day. Briar married the kindest guy on the planet, Ryan, at Bali Hai restaurant and it was a stupendous party!   Many of the meetings I had for this Bali Hai restaurant wedding took place at the Bride's parents' home. They were always so kind and generous with me, and I just love their family dynamic! I'd leave each meeting with a huge smile on my face. I just love the natural greenery on the altar. One of the best views of San Diego, in my opinion, is the view from the Bali Hai restaurant. How adorable are these two together? [...]

La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Wedding: Brett & Jake

w Brett and Jake's absolutely magical La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club wedding took place last October. We had coordinated the wedding of one of Brett's friends, and developed a great rapport over the phone. We were finally able to meet in person this last February, and it was raining buckets and buckets (very similar today's weather!). We were extremely concerned with the weather, being that their La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club wedding was going to take place on the beach for the ceremony and out by the pool for the reception. However, Mother Nature was on our side! And boy, was it hot! The beach was lined with tons of people, and it made the perfect backdrop for Brett and Jake's gorgeous day. Brett and Jake tapped us to provide décor for the wedding. We worked together with Brett' s mother to include tons of personal touches, as [...]

Scripps Seaside Forum Wedding: Kessee & Sumit

Kessee and Sumit were married in August at the Scripps Seaside Forum. To honor both sides of their cultures, we had both a Hindu ceremony and an American ceremony. It was chock full of modern details, and it was a challenge we were thrilled to pull off beautifully! The Bride and Groom also tapped us to design all of their florals. The day began with a traditional Hindu ceremony, followed by lunch. At that time, the Bride and Groom changed into more traditional American wedding attire, had an American ceremony and cocktail hour. The reception was so much fun! Check out all of these amazing photos!!!   One of the most fun details of the day was creating different vibes for each portion of the day--the Hindu ceremony, lunch, the American ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. We added and deleted details, and repurposed as much as possible! The Bride also wanted [...]

Scripps Seaside Forum Wedding: Anne & Dan

Anne and Dan's fall wedding at the Scripps Seaside Forum began as they got ready at the breathaking Pacific Terrace Hotel. They infused tons of great beach elements into their day. Ann and Dan had an absolutely perfect fall day. The weather was amazing, as was the view. All of which was topped off by the couple's adorable doggy walking down the aisle. After their touching ceremony, the couple took photos. We were a little nervous about how the weather would turn out, but the sunglasses the couple planned for were put to good use! Once photos and cocktail hour were complete, it was time to celebrate! We love their inclusion of simple but unique wedding details at the Scripps Seaside Forum. One of the coolest parts of the evening? The casino tables!!! Guests loved this inclusion. This is the very first time we've ever had casino tables at the [...]

US Grant Hotel Wedding: Amber & John

Amber and John were married last New Year's Eve at the US Grant hotel. It was an intimate, romantic candlelit ceremony and reception that was simply stunning. There are a number of beautiful places to get married indoors in San Diego, but this Crystal Ballroom at the US Grant takes the cake! We just love it. Seriously? How cute are these two? Love these grins that Taylor Abel captured. See what we mean? These guys are just so fun! It was so great to do a New Year's wedding. We loved our experience at the US Grant! Twin Oaks Garden Estate Wedding: Liz & Dave

Liz and Dave were married this past summer at the Twin Oaks Garden Estate, and it was an absolutely romantic and celebratory wedding day! The day began at the Church of St. Mary, a lovely Roman Catholic Church in North County not too far away from Twin Oaks Garden Estate. How fun are these personalized bottle openers? We love the balance between personal and functional! Their ceremony took place in late afternoon, giving the newlyweds plenty of time to take photos before beginning their wedding reception at Twin Oaks. Liz and Dave had a large bridal party, and it was wonderful to watch this fun group take photos! So many incredible photos by Sutography! Here are a sampling of our favorites of the Bride and Groom. The Twin Oaks Garden Estate is so beautiful naturally! There are tons of really fun places on property to take photos. While the newlyweds [...]

Leo Carrillo Wedding Featured on Style Me Pretty: Jamie & Jeremiah

This venue has such a rustic charm in the architecture and landscaping. With such lush greenery surrounding the property, weathered barns scattered throughout, antique windmills, peacocks roaming around, and the warmth of the sunshine, you just can’t help but smile. The wedding was recently featured on Style Me Pretty! Be sure to view the entire feature here! From the Mother of the Bride: "My daughter's dream was to have a 'shabby-chic,’ vintage wedding with lots of crafty and personalized touches." With so much love and thoughtfulness, Jamie’s family put together many decorative DIY projects. Each detail was well thought out and truly expressive of them and their love story. From the lit-up “J” initials, vintage plates used for guest seating and table numbers, lawn games, and wood signs, their décor was the perfect setup for their wedding day!   Jamie Jeremiah’s wedding ceremony was held under this giant pepper tree.
